Mike Holmgren Retires, Joe Banner Hired as CEO/President of Browns

After plenty of speculation of what would happen after ownership was completely transferred to Jimmy Haslam, it is now known that Mike Holmgren will officially retire at the end of the 2012 season and Joe Banner is hired to replace him as President and will also be the CEO.

Haslam in his press conference called Holmgren the de facto owner, alluding that with him taking over and planning on having a more hands on approach that Holmgren was no longer needed.

Joe Banner who was previously in Philadelphia with the Eagles is more known as a cap guy, the man you go to when you need to make the numbers work for you. What is unknown at this time, how involved in the on field decisions Banner will be when it comes to picking players in free agency and the draft.

Mike Holmgrens’ tenure with the Browns as team president has been less than stellar. Their record under his watch has been 10-27, with only 1 win over a divisional opponent. While one can make an argument that Holmgren is a hall of fame coach, his work as President of a football team leaves much to be desired.
