Fat Joe Says Allen Iverson was the Tupac of Basketball

While Allen Iverson isn’t in the NBA any longer, he’s still revered as one of the best guards to ever play the game. However rapper Fat Joe feels an even stronger reference is apropos.

In an Interview with the New York Times Fat compared Iversons’ impact on the league to fallen rapper Tupac Shakur and went as far as calling him a revolutionary.

“Allen Iverson was the Tupac of basketball; he was a true revolutionary. His talent was incredible, but as you know, in this game of basketball, experts will say, “If you don’t get a chip, then we don’t care what you’ve done,” which is unfair to a lot of phenomenal players, like Ewing, Charles Barkley and also Karl Malone and John Stockton.” Fat Joe

While I do believe Iverson was a great NBA player, future hall of famer, his on the court game wasn’t that revolutionary, however, his contribution to the culture is what made him so influential. The manner in which her carried himself, his style, they way he dressed, the fact that he refused to cut his hair even if would make him more mainstream friendly. Hell, the NBA changed the dress code rule in part because they were tired of players like Iverson coming press conferences in t-shirts and du-rags on. Iverson reminded you of the guy downstair instead of the guy in the office. He was relatable to the every day fan and was able to connect to the black and white kids who felt like they weren’t excepted.

Nonetheless, I wouldn’t say Iverson’s game was revolutionary as much as his contribution to the culture of basketball.

And just because we can here’s Iverson classic rant about practice, because who doesn’t want to laugh.
