Lakers Hire Mike D’Antoni as New Head Coach

The Los Angeles Lakers ended their coaching search and hired former Knicks and Suns coach Mike D’Antoni.

The speculation had been the Lakers first choice was Phil Jackson, but after he didn’t offer an initial yes, they went on to interview D’Antoni and Mike Dunleavy.

Late Sunday evening, early Monday morning they called Phil Jackson to inform him they had made their decision to go D’Antoni as their new coach.

D’Antoni as head coach of the Denver Nuggets, Phoenix Suns and New York Knicks has led his teams to the playoffs 5 times out of his 10 years averaging almost 55 wins in those playoff years.

D’Antoni is known as an offensive guru, which was on display during his time in Phoenix as his system allowed current Laker point guard Steve Nash to become a two time MVP. D’Antoni will look to bring an open court free flowing offense to LA to maximize the talent on the current roster.

D’Antoni is expected to join the team towards the end of the week as he recovers from knee surgery.
