A late race spin by Clint Bowyer from Saturday night’s race at Richmond, has become “the spin heard round the world.” For NASCAR it caused them to set a new precedent with the harshest ruling on an on track incident. For Michael Waltrip it cost him some money and respect. For Martin Truex Jr. it spelled the end of his run at a championship.

The spin coming with 7 laps to go, by Clint Bowyer, set up his teammate Martin Truex Jr. to clinch a spot in the Chase, eliminating pre-wreck leader Ryan Newman. Suspicion was raised that the accident may be intentional. Since a further investigation NASCAR has concluded that some tampering was done intentionally to change the outcome of the race.

This caused NASCAR to drop the hammer. Each driver for Michael Waltrip Racing was docked 50 points. The race team was fined $300,000, and the harshest move was that of ejecting Martin Truex Jr. from the Chase and reinstating Ryan Newman into the second Wild Card slot.

Never has a player been ejected from the Chase, but something had to be done when this fishy act went down on Saturday night.
