Tiger Woods Complains at Oak Hill

Tiger-woods

Tiger Woods paid a visit to Oak Hill Country Club in Rochester, NY the site of the PGA Championship and left very critical of the greens situation. This critique came following a practice round on Tuesday.

Of the greens Woods said, ” The greens are spotty, and it’ll be interesting to see what they do…” The greens were running under a 9 on the Stimpmeter where most major tournament courses run around a 12 or 13. With the speeds being low Woods is concerned since he has historically struggled to putt on slow greens.

The course is still being revamped following significant flooding in July. The greens are expected to be faster than they were this week, but will likely still be below the 12 or 13 that Woods is looking for.

Tiger will tee off this week at the Bridegstone as he prepares for the PGA Championship a week from tomorrow.

Andy Roddick Ends Career with Loss at US Open

Andy Roddicks’ career has come to an anticlimactic close. He leaves his tennis racket behind after losing to Juan Martin Del Potro in 4 sets Wednesday after rain forced the matched to be suspended Tuesday.

Roddick leaves behind a career that saw him win 32 career titles that includes one major victory in 2003 winning the US Open the same year he captured the #1 ranking as well.

While Roddick may leave behind what some will classify his career as underwhelming, Roddick is doing something that most athletes don’t experience. He’s walking away from the game on his own terms. To enjoy the rest of his life with his beautiful wife and do what it is he likes with out the stress of living up to others expectations on the kind of tennis player he should be.

Augusta Adds First Women Members, Condoleezza Rice and Darla Moore

The home of the Masters tournament, one of the PGA’s four majors has now removed one of the barriers they’ve held for years.

Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and South Carolina financier Darla Moore were invited to be members of the famed golf course making them the first women members since the club opened in 1932.

Billy Payne Augusta National Chairman had this to say in a statement;

“These accomplished women share our passion for the game of golf and both are well known and respected by our membership, it will be a proud moment when we present Condoleezza and Darla their green jackets when the club opens this fall. This is a significant and positive time in our club’s history and, on behalf of our membership, I wanted to take this opportunity to welcome them and all of our new members into the Augusta National family.”

The naming of their first female members comes on the heals of it being 10 years ago when Martha Burk challenged the clubs’ exclusive membership. When contacted by the Associated Press she was quoted as blurting out;

“Oh my god. We won.”

Moore when asked on her historical membership expounded on how Augusta National is one of the most beautiful places in the world and that this was an important occasion in her life.

“Augusta National has always captured my imagination, and is one of the most magically beautiful places anywhere in the world, as everyone gets to see during the Masters each April. I am fortunate to have many friends who are members at Augusta National, so to be asked to join them as a member represents a very happy and important occasion in my life. Above all, Augusta National and the Masters Tournaments have always stood for excellence, and that is what is so important to me.”

Rice who is a noted football fan says she looks forward to playing golf at Augusta and forming new friendships through this special opportunity.

“I have visited Augusta National on several occasions and look forward to playing golf, renewing friendships and forming new ones through this very special opportunity. I have long admired the important role Augusta National has played in the traditions and history of golf. I also have an immense respect for the Masters Tournament and its commitment to grow the game of golf, particularly with youth, here in the United States and throughout the world.”

While it may have taken 80 years, there is something to said about the progress that is being made by the members at Augusta National. What will show that this is not just for publicity, is if they end up inviting more members. Considering the prominence of these two ladies it’s not beyond realm to believe they just did this to pacify the people who clam they still have the bigotry thinking that divides people.

Nonetheless, congrats to these ladies, may they have plenty birdies on the course.

Wisconsin Congressman says Doping Case against Lance Armstrong is “Strained at Best”

Wisconsin Congressman James Sensenbrenner has voiced his opinion on the current U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) case against Lance Armstrong, claiming the case is “strained at best”. Congressman have a weird way of paying attention to things that have no relation to the country’s deficit, rising tuition cost or the fact that gas prices are crippling Americans pockets and place more focus on sports related matters that in the grand scheme don’t really matter.

That’s not all the Sensenbrenner had to say;

USADA seeks to strip Armstrong of his achievements and the substantial winnings that accompanied them without offering him even basic due process.”

While it is the role of the three branches to have a checks and balance system to keep everyone in order, this seems to be a waste of time on all levels. Instead of focusing on a case against someone who by all accounts doesn’t matter to the everyday lives and quality of life to many Americans it would seem as there would be some other fight Sensenbrenner could pick up that would have a much more significant impact.

The USADA CEO Travis Tygart responded to the congressman’s by reiterating that their job is to keep clean and maintain a level playing field.

“We are well aware of his popularity and the admirers he has on Capitol Hill and elsewhere, but our responsibility is to clean athletes who demand that USADA protect their right to a level playing field by eradicating drug use from sport,”

While both Congressman Sensenbrenner and the USADA have a noble cause they’re both fighting for, it seems there are other issues they could be fighting that would be in the end more important.

What seems to be driving this agenda is people want to either believe the message that Lance Armstrong stands for in which a man could beat cancer and come back and rise to the top of his sport and be an inspiration to anyone who has ever had a bout with cancer. Or you want to believe that in a sport full of cheaters that he couldn’t be the only angel living among a culture full of devilish temptations.

Whatever the outcome of this case, hopefully the government will pursue a cause that’s rooted in health prevention and stop wasting our money on chasing athletes that cheat.
