Cleveland Indians, Terry Francona Announce Coaching Staff

The Cleveland Indians and Manager Terry Francona today announced the formation of the 2013 Major League coaching staff.

Francona today appointed SANDY ALOMAR (Bench Coach),MICKEY CALLAWAY (Pitching Coach), KEVIN CASH (Bullpen Coach), BRAD MILLS (Third Base Coach), MIKE SARBAUGH(First Base Coach) and TY VAN BURKLEO (Hitting Coach) to the Major League coaching staff for the upcoming season. The staff owns a combined 147 years of experience in professional baseball.

Alomar, Sarbaugh and Callaway all remain a part of the Tribe family while Mills, Cash and Van Burkleo join from Houston, Toronto and Houston, respectively.

“I think we actually have a really well-rounded staff, it wasn’t necessary for me to have prior relationships with people. But I think in some instances, when you’re looking for coaches, that’s probably the reason you’re looking for guys. You’ve been around them and you appreciate the way they work.” Said Terry Francona.

Eagles Fire Defensive Coordinator Juan Castillo After 3-3 Start

The Eagles the last season and a half have not been the team that their high priced payroll and flashy names would suggest. The defense was being helmed by Juan Castillo who was previously the teams offensive line coach.

After losing 8 games in 2011, many of which they led in the 4th quarter, and starting off 3-3 in 2012, with the defense struggling Andy Reid and the Eagles decided to go in a different direction.

Castillo is replaced by Todd Bowles, who was the teams secondary coach.

The Eagles face a ton of pressure which declarations from management that have said if the team doesn’t make the playoffs they would make a change at head coach and quarterback.

While the team is in a bye week which should make for a good time as any to make a change. It was a radical move to hire Castillo in that role in the first place, so his firing could be seen as a sign of panic by Reid. I question, if this doesn’t work and spark the players to perform better, where does Reid go from there?

Cavs Close to 3 Year Deal with Alonzo Gee

While the Cavs have been quiet for the most part this off season, they are reportedly close to a deal with the shooting guard Alonzo Gee for 3 years worth 3.8 million according to John Telic of Fox 8 News.

I think this deal is more than reasonable for Gee who has great upside. He has shown the ability to be a decent scorer and servicable defender. The only downfall to this signing is, is he a shooting guard or small forward. His ball handling isn’t up to par that you trust his wholeheartedly to create his own shot, and he’s not the biggest guy in the world to go up against some of the elite small forwards in the league.

While I like Gee, and what he brings to the team, I’d like to see if he develops a more consistent outside shot. If he does, he should command more playing time as there’s no one on the Cavs who’s a dead eye outside shooter. It’ll be interesting to see what the Cavs and coach Byron Scott does to generate scoring on this team.

Phil Jackson Takes Shot at Knicks, Says They’re a ‘Clumsy Team’

For months there have been rumors that Phil Jackson has the itch to return to the sidelines and coach again and only one year after retirement. The New York Knicks were rumored to be one of the teams that would court Jackson and work his magic to guide the Knicks back to prominence.

According to the New York Times transcripts to an interview with HBO’s Real Sports that will air on Tuesday June 19, 2012, Jackson was asked by Andrea Kremer on his thoughts on the Knicks he had this to say;

“There’s just too much work that has to be done with that team, it’s a little bit of a clumsy team. Stoudemire doesn’t fit together well with Carmelo, Stoudemire’s a really good player. But he’s got to play in a certain system and a way. Carmelo has to be a better passer. And the ball can’t stop every time it hits his hands.”

If I can translate what Jackson is trying to say, basically, the Knicks roster is a mess, and I’m too damn old to go there and deal that.

While Jackson has 11 NBA titles as a coach, it’s very presumptuous that he can go to any situation and turn it around. So much has to come together, your star players have to have a certain mind set to be prepared to deal with Jackson. Also the pressure of coaching in New York and Jackson’s different way of dealing with players, who’s to say that, it’s going to work? Remember with the Bulls and Lakers Jackson had a top 5 player and normally took over the team once they couldn’t get over the hump. The only hump the Knicks are having trouble with are the Wednesday blues. Unless the Knicks make some grandiose move to bring in more complimentary pieces, it’s hard to assume from what we’ve seen that the Knicks are ready to compete for a championship.

Good thing is, this is all water under the bridge, as Jackson says that he was never called, and asked about the job. If Jackson was still interested in coaching, and wanted the Knicks job, I’m pretty sure he could’ve found a way to make his feelings known. Looks to me, he’s fine with his tenure as a Knick only being as a player for now.
