Weekend Entertainment Wrap Up #10

Did you hear…?

It looks as if 16 year old Gabrielle made history by becoming the first African-American to win a gold medal in the Women’s Gymnastic Individual All-Around Competition during the London 2012 Olympic Games. That was her second medal as she and her teammates known as the ‘Fierce Five” took gold in the Women’s team competition. This was the team’s first Olympic title since 1996.

According to ESPN, Douglas expressed herself saying, “I wanted to seize the moment,” Douglas said. “It hasn’t sunk in yet. Team finals hasn’t sunk in yet. But it will.” In the lead from the first event, Douglas finished the night by rocking the O2 Arena with her electric floor routine, flashing a dazzling smile and lots of pizzazz. When her score posted 62.232, coach Liang Chow told Douglas she had won the gold.

Looking back on the summer Olympics, Douglas reminded me of the 1996 summer Olympics and Dominique Dawes outstanding performance. With this being the start of her Olympic career, one can only imagine what is next for Gabrielle Douglas in the years to come. Douglas will be a household name and an inspiration to many. She recently became the new face on the Kellogg’s Corn Flakes cereal box. It has been reported that Douglas’ endorsement deals could reach as high as $90 million dollars with P&G brand name products included. I am sure that America will see a lot more of Gabrielle Douglas.

Is K. Michelle from Love & Hip Hop Atlanta dating Olympic gold medalist Ryan Lochte? It has been all over the internet that the two have been dating. However, both are denying that they were ever together. The two are stating that they are single and just friends. K. Michelle did an interview on GlobalGrind.com to set the record straight and talk about what type of relationship she and Lochte have.

According to MediaTakeOut, who refers to Lochte as Luchte: “K.Michelle is in a bit of a dilemma … she’s currently dating one of the most popular Olympians, Ryan Luchte, but he’s not claiming her. Why you ask? Well, people close to Ryan don’t think that K. Michelle has the right image for the OLYMPIAN. As one person in the know puts it, ‘K. Michelle is real hood … that’s not the image he wants to portray. Besides it’s never good for a handsome man to tell people that he has a girlfriend.”

It shouldn’t matter what other people think about the relationship. The only thing that should matter is if they feel for one another and if they want to be together. Who are we to judge just because two people from two different backgrounds and lifestyles saw something in one another worth giving a relationship a try? Like they always say, opposites attract.

Serena Williams defeated Maria Sharapova and won the Olympic Gold medal in the individual games. Williams became the second woman in history to win a Golden Slam. The first woman was Steffi Graf, who won in the 1988 games.

According to ESPN, Williams commented on Graf and her own performance. “Growing up watching her, I always liked her,” Williams said. “Having a chance to be mentioned in the same name — I always thought, ‘OK, one person I’ll never be mentioned in the same name is Steffi Graf. She’s done everything.” “I was so focused here,” she said. “I remember I was serving and I was thinking: ‘Serena, this is your best chance to win a gold medal. You’re at Wimbledon, you’re on grass, you play great on grass, pull it together, just win this.’ And that’s what I thought about.”

What really got the media’s attention was the victory dance Williams did after she won her medal. The dance she did is known as the C-Walk aka the Crip Walk which is associated a gang from Compton,Calif.

According to the Washington Post, During the post-match news conference, though, Williams backtracked: “Actually, there is a name. But I don’t know if . . . it’s inappropriate,” Williams said, responding to inquiries about her jig. “It’s just a dance we do in California.”

What is the big deal? She did a victory dance. It wasn’t the first time it was done, and I am pretty sure it will not be the last.  It was reported that a former NBA player did the exact game after winning a game. I understand the dance origin doesn’t have the most welcoming background, however people it is just a dance. I think the attention should go back on to Williams winning the Gold Medal rather than what kind of victory dance she did after receiving the news of one of her greatest accomplishments.

Music Review: Kahsyno Memoirs of a Time Traveler (mixtape)

Kahsyno (pronounced Casino) has released his second mix tape Memoirs of a Time Traveler with Dj Battlecat behind him does he hit the jackpot or is he left with no chips?

The tape starts off with an old school sample and then gradually comes the hard hitting drum for Hollaback, where he gives you memorable lines like “Keep a lot of green like an A’s” fan. The beat is hot and it’s a decent song for an intro. Hollaback is followed up by Dumb, which sounds like his club song. After hearing him perform this live the recorded version sounds like it lacks the energy necessary for me to go dumb. Not a bad song though the beat is straight, absolutely something to play in the car to let the speakers bump. Rated X and How Could You have nice beats (Rated X the better of the two) the lyrics were cool but it comes off like he’s trying too hard to relate and make a ladies track. On Rated X there was a too much talking during the intro, and at the end the conversation went just a little too long and wore out its welcome by its close. Next up is Shoe Game where he uses a Lil Wayne sample to brag on his shoe game. The first time I listened to this song, I hated it, but it grew on me, one of the lines that stuck with me were “when it’s time to party/ decide on a pair of Barkley’s’ when feeling sadity/ throw on a pair penny’s”. So if you’re a shoe head this song will definitely have you checking your shoe collection in comparison. On KO Kahsyno makes it a point to tell you he’s ready to bubble like root beer. He sounds most comfortable on songs like this throughout the cd where he’s allowed to be lyrical. Live Wit It has the same effect as dumb, I’ve seen him perform this live, and the recorded version comes off just a little dry. However, if it’s your first time hearing it, it’s definitely a toe tapper. Lookin For A |Dime and I’ma Get Her have the kind of energy you would expect from club songs; however for me lyrically they don’t showcase his true skills or measure up to the bar he set on other songs. On I’ma Get Her he’s outshined by his comrades and comes off sounding listless. Nonetheless the beats these songs are accompanied with will probably have listeners not paying much attention to the lyrics.

My favorite track on the cd is Can’t Stop Me; he talks about overcoming obstacles and being focused on his goals. With lyrics like “I get ya mind high just like a poppy seed” he keeps your attention throughout the whole song, and with Froggy G on the hook and DJ Battlecat on the boards this song is one of the best on the cd. Had We Met is a track where he speaks about meeting a chick and contemplates had they met somewhere else would the relationship be different. “Way before Kahsyno, back then just Thomas/I’m still the same dude now I promise/ just a lil older, a lil more polished” is how he tries to tell her he’s the same guy he’s always been. This song seems more like him and how he would approach the ladies compared to Rated X. Feel good music is just what it sounds like, upbeat instrumental and lyricism to accompany. Nice follow up to Had We Met, it keeps the feel good vibe going. Stay seems out of sequence, sounds like an emcee venting his frustration, though a good song but breaks up the feel good vibe that rounded out the album. Nevertheless, to end the cd is Toast where he toast and to all those who have helped him along his journey, fitting song to end with. All in all I’d definitely recommend this album to anyone. He’s not your run of the mill rapper talking about drugs and guns just because. He gives you lyrics, some joints to play in your ride and some rock to in the club. On a scale of 1-10 it’s a solid 7.5. It’s without doubt a cd I’d keep in the car to throw in.

Rapper T.I. Goes Back to Jail

image

T.I. was released yesterday from jail in Arkansas and was to report to a halfway house in Atlanta. Only problem is, he never made it to the halfway house, upon his arrival federal agents were waiting there to transport him to back to federal prison in Atlanta. Arkansas officials claim that he misled them on his method of travel, not informing them that he would be traveling by tour bus back to Atlanta, which may be a violation of his probation. Now as petty as this may be, if you were T.I. why would you take any chance running a foul of the law. Why not just ride back quietly and wait till you get at least back home to push the envelope. T.I. reminds of that character Can’t Get Right from the movie Life, he just can’t get right and most times its the smallest of details that get him caught up

Rapper Mistah Fab and NBA Player Dorell Wright Giveaway Backpacks in Oakland

image

Often times you read stories about rappers and ballers getting into trouble. Rarely are there good deeds publicized. Recently rap artist Mistah Fab and Golden State Warrior Dorell Wright were apart of a backpack giveaway and cookout in Oakland, California where they gave out 1,000 backpacks filled with pens, pencills, paper, folders and other school supplies. The event also included Mt Zion Baptist Church and other community members. When asked about the even in the video below Mistah Fab says that it was the community that was able to make this happen and that he was just happy to be apart of. Things like this go on all the time, but get no attention, but they don’t go unnoticed. The people of that communtiy will forever remember this. One day the national will recognize that not all rappers and hoopers are trouble makers, that some actually care about their community. Check out the video below. For more footage of the event.

Machine Gun Kelly Organizes Flash Mob

Saturday afternoon Cleveland rap artist Machine Gun Kelly planned and followed through with a flash mob at Strongsville Mall. The reason…to show his fans he was still down to earth and that he cared about them. Good in theory, bad in execution in my opinion. There’s a million other ways to show your fans your still cool, that the fame hasn’t gotten to your head. Organize a kickball game, setup a charity event, organize a school supplies give away at Richmond Mall. Wouldn’t that show you’re still down to earth more than going all the way out to Strongsville Mall to cause organized chaos just to get arrested and have the media spin it in a negative light? If the purpose was to get attention, done. Outside of that I don’t get it. If this gets back to MGK I’d be happy to have him explain it to me. None the less, congrats to him on signing to Bad Boy.
