Change for the Yankees

justin_morneau-5525

The team that wears the pinstripes is being questioned after being beaten up in the playoffs last year and now a plethora of injuries for the Yankees is causing everybody to question the team. Now after the news that Mark Teixeira may be out longer than expected it is now time to look at the move that the Yankees must make.

Since most teams at this point will not be looking to dump players or make trades with the regular season just 10 days away. One team though that is not expected to perform is the Minnesota Twins and they have a player in Justin Morneau that is very appealing to the Yankees.

He is in the final year of his contract so he is cheap and the Twins would not be looking to get a whole lot in return. The Yankees could use Morneau at first til Teixeira gets back, and then could bring him off the bench once Mark returns. The Yankees could get Morneau for Jayson Nix, a minor league reliever, and by paying his salary for this year. It is not a whole lot to give up and the gain could be huge. The only question is will Cashman pull the trigger. Time will tell.

Lakers Jordan Hill to Have Season Ending Hip Surgery

image

After hurting his hip last Sunday against the Denver Nuggets Friday the Lakers announced that Jordan Hill will need to have season ending hip surgery.

“Andre Miller drove baseline and Kobe [Bryant], trying to go back and guard him, he accidentally stepped on my foot. Like, I stayed in one spot but my hip kept going. It kind of pulled the joint out.”

Is how Hill described how the injury occurred.

Team doctors said that Hill has loose fragments in addition to a possible labral tear in his hip. Recovery time is estimated to be six months after surgery, which should allow him to be ready for the 2013-2014 season.

MLB and Players Agree to In Season HGH Testing

Major League Baseball and the Players Union have agreed to in season blood testing to detect an increase in testosterone. It’s a big step from last year when they only performed blood testing during spring training.

Bud Selig was quoted as saying the agreement is a proud day for baseball, and that MLB will continue to be the leader in drug testing in sports.

“This is a proud and a great day for baseball, we’ll continue to be a leader in this field and do what we have to do. This is remarkable when you think of where we were 10, 12, 15 years ago and where we are today, nobody could have dreamed it.”

According to the new drug testing agreement, the World Anti-Doping Agency laboratory will keep the records of players which will include a baseline testosterone test and will perform a Carbon Isotop Ratio Spectrometry (IRMS) test if a urine sample that varies to far from the baseline test. The WADA laboratory is located in Laval, Quebec.

John Wall Slated to Return to From Knee Injury Saturday

john wall

Washington Wizards guard and former number 1 pick John Wall is aiming to return to the court for the first time in the 2012-2013 season after suffering from a stress injury to the left knee cap.

Wall on his injury said he wanted to take his time and come back when he was completely healthy.

“Knees are serious. I just took my time and made sure everything was right. Hopefully, everything continues to go well so I can be back out there with my team on Saturday,”

Wall has missed 31 games so far and the Wizards record currently stands at 5-28. The Wizards hope to pair rookie Bradley Beal in the backcourt with Wall and deliver a dynamic offensive attack.

While the Wizards will be better with Wall than without, the team won’t see a big improvement in their record. Wall is going to have to get into playing shape and acclimated with his teammates, some he’s never played with before.

In the next 19 days the Wizards will play 11 games including a 5 game west coast trip where they play the Clippers, Nuggets, Kings, Jazz, and Blazers. So Wall will face some of the top point guards in the league, so there won’t be much time to ramp up, as he’ll be facing the likes of Chris Paul, Ty Lawson, and Damien Lillard.

To set the expectation, I wouldn’t look for Wall to produce like he did in his first two years, what I would hope to see is his decision making remain at a high level. Keep the turnovers to a minimum. He’s averaged 16 points over his first two year, however I wouldn’t expect that from him consistent for a few weeks

Cavs Anderson Varejao Out 6-8 Weeks After Knee Surgery

image

The Cleveland Cavs announced today that center Anderson Varejao well undergo knee surgery in Thursday January 10th on his right knee to repair a split in his vastus medialis.

Varejao had been out since December 18th with what was initially diagnosed as a knee contusion.

After weeks of rehabbing an MRI showed that the split was worsening and tissue underneath the tear was herniating and pinching with movement of the kneee.

After a second opinion, the Cavs and Varejao decided it was best to move forward with surgery now.

In the last three seasons, including the current one, Varejao had played a total 81 games. 25 this season and last (2011-2012) and 31 games in 2010-211. While very talented, if Varejao can’t stay on the court he proves to have little value for a youthful Cavs team.

His injuries coincide with his minute increase, over the last 3 seasons he’s averaged 33 minutes. In his previous 6 seasons he averaged 23 minutes, with his guest highest being 28.5 minutes per game.

Varejao was having his best and most complete season averaging 14.1 points, 14.4 rebounds 3.4 assist and shooting 47% from the field.
