Change for the Yankees

justin_morneau-5525

The team that wears the pinstripes is being questioned after being beaten up in the playoffs last year and now a plethora of injuries for the Yankees is causing everybody to question the team. Now after the news that Mark Teixeira may be out longer than expected it is now time to look at the move that the Yankees must make.

Since most teams at this point will not be looking to dump players or make trades with the regular season just 10 days away. One team though that is not expected to perform is the Minnesota Twins and they have a player in Justin Morneau that is very appealing to the Yankees.

He is in the final year of his contract so he is cheap and the Twins would not be looking to get a whole lot in return. The Yankees could use Morneau at first til Teixeira gets back, and then could bring him off the bench once Mark returns. The Yankees could get Morneau for Jayson Nix, a minor league reliever, and by paying his salary for this year. It is not a whole lot to give up and the gain could be huge. The only question is will Cashman pull the trigger. Time will tell.

Joe Montana Wanted to End Career with Steelers not Chiefs

Joe Montana played most of his career where most players played one team. Outside of your select few, most of your childhood sports heros played in one place. Joe Montana was on track until the 49ERS acquired Steve Young and were grooming him to take the reigns once his skills slipped.

Well when that day came in 1991 that Steve Young started 10 games you could see the writing on the wall that the 49ERS were trying to transition in to the Young era. In 1992 Young started all 16 games and earned NFL MVP honors which prompted Montana to orchestrate a trade that would get him out of San Francisco.

Even after a last ditch effort, the 49ERS told Montana that he would be the starter in the 1993 season, however at that point the damage had been done, and Montana was already committed to leaving and didn’t believe the team was sincere about designating him the starter.

What we didn’t know until Joe Montana mentioned it on the Dan Patrick Show, was that he originally was trying to find a way to get to his hometown team of the Pittsburgh Steelers. Crazy thing is the Steelers told him no, because they had the greatness that is Neil O’Donnel. Let me say that again, NEIL O’DONNEL.

Imagine what the Steelers would’ve looked like with Montana there in 1993, and who’s the genius that turned down having one of the top 5 quarterbacks in the league on their team?

Do you know what the Chiefs gave up for Joe Cool? Their first round pick (18th), thats it. Another forgotten tid bit, the 49ERS were attempting to trade Steve Young to the Chiefs in the off season of 1992 for linebacker Derrick Thomas, but the two teams couldn’t agree on draft pick compensation, so the deal was nixed.

Below you can watch the interview, Steelers comments are at the 3 minute 50 seconds mark.

In this young off season, the Cleveland Indians are already making moves, trading for Mike Aviles and Yan Gomes, sending Esmil Rogers to the Blue Jays. It’ll be a while before we see how these moves impact the team, but hopefully they can provide the Tribe with an offensive jolt.

AVILES, 31, appeared in 136 games for the Red Sox as their starting shortstop last season, batting .250 with 13 HR and 60 RBI. OKC Thunder Trade James Harden to Houston Rockets

After being unable to reach a deal with the reigning 6th man of the year, the Oklahoma City Thunder decided to trade away James Harden to the Houston Rockets.

Along with Harden the Thunder send center Cole Aldrich and forwards Daequan Cook and Lazar Hayward to Houston. In return the Thunder will receive guards Kevin Martin, rookie Jeremy Lamb and two 2013 first round picks and a 2013 second round pick.

All summer both sides had been negotiating and attempting to come to a compromise. The Thunder last offer to Harden was a 4 year deal worth $53-54 million, while Harden was looking for something closer to $58-60 million.

The deadline for teams to sign their players to contract extensions is October 31, but the Thunder felt it was best to end negotiations and move forward with Harden so the contract talks wouldn’t become a distraction.

”We wanted to sign James to an extension, but at the end of the day, these situations have to work for all those involved. Our ownership group again showed their commitment to the organization with several significant offers. We were unable to reach a mutual agreement, and therefore executed a trade that capitalized on the opportunity to bring in a player of Kevin’s caliber, a young talent like Jeremy and draft picks, which will be important to our organizational goal of a sustainable team.” said Sam Presti.

While the Thunder do lose 17 points and 4 assist that Harden provided off the bench, they receive a professional scorer in Kevin Martin who’s averaged 18 ppg his entire career along with a sufficient ball handler in Jeremy Lamb who helped lead the UCONN Huskies to a 2011 NCAA Championship.

The Rockets are expected to sign Harden to a 4 year contract extension worth $60 million, the max he can receive under the new terms of the CBA.
